Boone, NC

Go farther into the NC mountains to discover Boone!

Boone gets its name from the famous American pioneer Daniel Boone. This historic town is also home to Appalachian State University. Did you know the university was formed in 1899 after a group of people in Watauga County decided to create a movement to educate teachers in northwestern North Carolina?

Boone is the perfect place to relax while enjoying summer in the NC mountains.

Daniel Boone Heritage Trail is a great way to immerse yourself in the history of Boone and North Carolina. The trail links spots that had important roles in the history of this town and the pioneer himself. You will come across some famous sites, such as a replica of Boone’s cabin and more.

River and Earth Adventures offers several aquatic sports events in the NC mountains, such as rafting, canoeing, kayaking, and a paddling school if you want to challenge yourself. They also offer climbing trips and guided hiking and caving experiences.

If you are not an avid hiker, do not worry about it! The Cascades Trail is an easy 1-mile circular walk that takes you through the forest on the edge of the Blue Ridge Parkway. You will discover Falls Creek, which will lead you to beautiful viewpoints.

Valle Crucis, NC

Located between Boone and Banner Elk, this rural town looks as it did when it was built. If you want a day to relax and recharge, enjoy a picnic or a short walk around the Valle Crucis Community Park. Make sure to visit the Lavender House and relish a massage in lavender heaven! You can even take a class and learn how to make your skincare products, candles, or tea. Alternatively, you can enjoy fly fishing along the Watauga River, and if you need supplies, you will find the Mast General Store has everything you need.

Banner Elk, NC

There are plenty of events in the NC mountains for you and your little ones.

Banner Elk is a well-known place for its trails and beautiful landscapes. It is also a great place to spend the day with your family.

High Mountain Expeditions offers a selection of activities, from river tubing to hiking and caving.

For more experienced mountaineers, Grandfather Mountain State Park offers more strenuous trails. Make sure you bring suitable clothing and equipment and be ready to be mesmerized by the diversity of wildlife.

Apple Hill Farm is a great place to go with the entire family. Spend a day touring the farm and seeing the animals. Children will love it! Make sure to check the website for special events.

Blowing Rock, NC

Blowing Rock is a small town known for its cool climate, with a range of outdoor activities that will blow you away. During the spring and the summer months, Blowing Rock hosts a series of outdoor events in the NC mountains. Visit the open-air art galleries, where you’ll find jury-selected artists, from painters to jewelers. Or check out the symphony orchestra playing by the lake at Chetola and the series of concerts in Memorial Park.
